Day 94

The Groupawn goes to the Mall

I’m not sure what I expected, but to me, the Mall of America was pretty much just a mall. A big mall at that, with a few added attractions that I guess you don’t usually find in your everyday suburban shopping complex…

like roller coasters.

Maybe to some this is impressive, but I always pictured it as bigger. One thing that did impress me?

The Lego Store

But I’ve seen similar setups before such as the one on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

Apparently I missed the aquarium, which is kind of a bummer, but I did find plenty of entertainment…

Has this ad campaign ever sold a burger?

Confounded by the gadgets at the local Sharper-Stone store for all your Father’s Day needs. Seriously…what is that???

This refreshing store sells all things distinctly Minnesotan

Yo Dawg I Herd You Like Malls So I Put A Mall In Yo Mall So You Can Shop While You Shop*

For those of you not sure what’s going on here, that is a MOA store where they sell MOA souvenirs (*see Yo Dawg meme).

The only thing I found that I really wanted to buy.

I wonder how many people that aren’t living off Groupons visit the Mall of America and manage to get out of there without spending a dime.

  1. I went there a few years ago when I had some time to kill before a flight. I think all I bought was a refrigerator magnet from the Minnesot-ah store. Did you see the store where you can rent a room and take a nap for $1/minute? THAT was something I’ve never seen before. $10 for a 10 minute nap. I was amazed.

  2. I think what your doing is crazy but yet it has to be rather an adventure…

  3. Hey Josh, like the many others who post here, came across your story from CNN and wanted to add to those who are encouraging the best for you and your future experiences. I love what you are out there getting to do – keep up the great posts and good luck.

  4. I am so glad to see that I am not the only one that was underwhelmed! The Lego store was definitely a highlight. I had planned to “get out of there without spending a dime,” but Marbles: The Brain Store lured me in. They have some really cool nerdy games!

  5. I had to buy food, but that was it. We ate at the Hard Rock Cafe that was near the roller coasters and stuff.
I disappoint people all the time when I tell them it’s just a giant version of a mall, with roller coasters. Not worth that plane ticket just to see it. I did enjoy the rest of the city though!

  6. yes! the rollercoaster from mighty ducks…thanks! ps. i think cassie and bill have those lego heads. neato

i think the M.O.A. needs motorized walkways as its to big

  8. MOA is just that, a bigger version of a typical mall. Back when the amusement park was Camp Snoopy I had an annual pass for my daughter. It was a great deal, $85 for a whole year. But they slapped some paint on the rides, added a few more attractions, renamed it and jacked up the price to $220 for little ones and $250 for older kids. My daughter loved the bounce house and we would go during the week when it was really slow. She could go in over and over with no wait. It was like we had the whole place to ourselves. We would eat before we went most of the time.

I normally left MOA buying something from Bath and Body or having gotten an aqua massage if another adult came with me on our visit. I would go there 2-3 times a month. But now I might go there once every 3-4 months. My daughter LOVES build-a-bear. But other then that any store I want to shop at can be found closer to home as I live in a suburb of Saint Paul. Honestly, after I visited New York, I realized if you’re from a large metropolitan area or have visited one- MOA isn’t that impressive. I love living in the Twin Cities. But it’s not somewhere I would come for a vacation. But maybe that’s because I’m taking where I live for granite, since I’ve never lived anywhere else.

  9. Josh: I’m sorry I missed you being in town. I hadn’t followed you in a few weeks so I missed the opportunity in meeting with you. I had some groupons I could have used to feed you. Oh well, if you get back to Minneapolis maybe I will be free to meet you. I like to follow where you are. Keep up the updates.

I used to go to a convention in Minneapolis and was dragged by my friends to the MoA every single year. Like they thought it would have changed in the 11 months and 3 weeks since the last time they had been there. Repeat after me guys, “It is a mall, like any other. It is just a mall.” Now, can we go get food at Khan’s now? Outside the stupid mall?
