Day 11

Finding Balance and Growing Accustomed

I want to start by thanking you all for your support on this journey I have embarked upon. I have been blown away by the number of people who have offered their couches, cars, time and resources to me for the next year. Friends, family, acquaintances, and total strangers bombard me with messages and well wishes from everywhere in the country via Twitter (Groupawned), Facebook (Live Off Groupon), Email ([email protected]), phone (847-452-9181), and here in the comments for each post. The thing I’ve been most surprised about is how many people (that I’ve never met) have been willing to pick me up and give me rides just about anywhere. I’ve met some really cool people so far and I look forward to seeing/meeting you all during the next year! I get tons of questions about my plans and where I’m heading so I want to explain that at this moment I barely know what today has in store for me, let alone next week. What I can tell you is that I will go as many places as I possibly can. Each time someone gives a shout-out for their city (by the way, e-mails & texts with your name included are the most helpful!), it helps to give me an idea of where I have readers who are ready and willing to help.

As I continue along blogging about this crazy adventure, I’m going to try to make an effort to lighten the load a little (shorter posts with more frequency). At the moment, I have quite a bit to write about my time in Cincinnati and Columbus, so expect those soon as I work to catch up!  In the mean time I’m going to be exploring Cleveland until Sunday. I will then be taking a road trip with Live Off Groupon finalist Becky Alexander & friends (of her’s) to NYC (should be there 5/24-5/27). While I’m out there, I’m going to try to make arrangements to get to Philly, Boston, Providence & Pittsburgh. After that, I’ll be looking into how to get to Seattle so any ideas/help with getting across the country would be fantastic!

  1. Cleveland is great isn’t it. Have you done all 3 things there are to do yet?

  2. my daughter and her husband live just outside of Philly. I be waiting to see when you get there. may you guys can meet up.

  3. Woohoo, Seattle, that means you’ll be closer to Portland!! My job has weird hours, so I’ll probably be able to help you…I will make it work! I’ve lived here 30 years, and my friends call me “Queen of Portland”…and oh yeah, I like to eat too! :)

And you have a place to stay, shower, and do laundry with us whenever you get here.

  4. lol steven, so much hate

Not sure about how you’re going to get cross country, but when you’re here let me know, and I’ll definitely help get you around…I’d recommend coming late June/July because the weather will be much more dependable then…and really, you can’t beat the northwest in the summer time…

  6. Have you been able to try out some of the great Groupon experiences beyond restaurants and bars? We’re really looking forward to you getting your Mani/Pedi, going Bowling or trying paint ball.

  7. Best way to Seattle is through Denver!! Tons of stuff to do here too!

  8. D.C. needs some love too!!

  9. Jackie Jansen says:

I hope you enjoy this adventure. We are in Austin, TX and are happy to show you around….though you may not want to swing through this part of the US in July & August…unless you like to sweat!

  10. I could use my miles you get you a flight to Seattle in exchange for some cool Raleigh/Durham coupons. (Depends on what you’ve got….)

  11. BTW, you also have a place to stay should you ever come to Raleigh.

  12. Hi Josh, Amber’s sister here. If you make it all the way to LA you’re welcome at our house. It would be great to meet you. Love, Debra

  13. BOSTON! BOSTON! BOSTON! YAYYYY!!! I think there are LOTS of us here that want to help…

  14. Come to NASHVILLE!!!!! Amazing city, amazing people, amazing Groupons!

  15. Just saw you for first time on fox8 news here in Ohio . Hope you have safe trip and send email if you can. Think this seems interesting.

  16. Brad you are so right! How can you possibly get to Portland without a pit stop in Denver! It is a really fun city and I love living here!!

  17. Come to Minnesota!!!

  18. Too bad you’re not in the Seattle area this week. I’m a bit further south (Tacoma), and our local transit system just mailed me a free bus pass good for the next 10 days that I could have handed off (already have my own bus pass). Maybe this would be a helpful thing to try and trade for? I know that I’d be happy to trade you for, say, a book of transit vouchers, or a weekend bus pass, or things like that, and in this area you can get pretty much anywhere on the bus if you’re creative.

  19. Once you find your way to Seattle, I’d be happy to show you around. I work a day job, but that’s usually done by 3:30 or 4:00 pm.

  20. I agree with Cherie - if you’re in NYC, Boston, Philly, Providence & Pitt, you have to come to DC!! More options for flights/rides/train if you want to make your way out to Seattle, too!!

  21. Kristen says:

Would love to see you in Boston. If you make it up here, my hubby and I would be happy to help you out!

  22. jilanne says:

I am in Portland also and I would love to meat up with you and help you anyway I can!! Depending on you timming I might be in seattle and able to give you a ride from seattle to portland!!!just let me know when and how I can help!!

  23. Ditto to Denver! Everything is better a mile above sea level.

  24. Marissa says:

Woo hoo Boston! Make sure you use that Groupon for Yoki in Medford while you’re here. Best sushi you will EVER have in your life…make sure you get the Red Sox Roll!

  25. JenInAtl says:

I’ve got your MARTA bus/train pass covered for you WHEN you get to Atlanta!!! We love Groupons here… don’t we guys!!! JenInATL

  26. Colleen says:

Hey Josh, Denver is beautiful in the summer! Remember, Denver really means downtown, Breckenridge, Copper, Vail, Airforce Academy, Cog Railway, Pikes Peak, Boulder, Estes Park, Casa Bonita etc. When you visit Denver, you visit the entire front range! You’ll have a party waiting!

  27. Josh - I am one of the total strangers that will help you on this journey. I’m in Minneapolis and will hook you up when you’re in town - put you up in a hotel, make sure you’re fed and give you a tour of the fun stuff we’ve got to do here. Also, if you haven’t checked it out, you should start following my blog (which is all about getting free and cheap stuff…maybe you can get more freebies to help you in bartering with others) at http://www.pocketyourdollars.com. I’ll be following along with you during this year and am excited to hear of all the creative things you do to make it happen.

  28. Colleen - I’ve only stopped in Denver one time and I never made it out of the airport…I can’t wait!
Carrie, JeninATL, Marissa - Thanks! I can’t wait to meet you all.

  29. Another shout out from DC….whenever you make it back to the East Coast!

  30. Tori Rosenthal says:

Hey Josh, sorry I wasn’t following you more closely until today, but Lainey is in New York and would have a mattress for you! (Great interview on the Today Show.) Facebook me and I will give you her phone number. Of course, we hope you make it to Denver or anywhere close to Cheyenne. We’ll come and get you to our town to eat, sleep, and wash! Love you! Tori

  31. Come down Interstate-80 and Groupon in Omaha. We will take good care of you here.
