Day 15

I’m too big for NY!

Last night I arrived in NYC just before midnight. Live off Groupon finalist, Becky “Costanza” Alexander, and her friends Mike & Lauren decided to take a road trip to NYC for a couple days in order to get me here (talk about a good sport!). Due to good music and even better company, this was the shortest 8 hour road-trip I’ve had the pleasure of taking. After quite a few days of rain throughout my visit to Ohio, the weather decided to cooperate on my way out of town (of course). (Caption: I believe this photo was taken in PA)

I found this next picture interesting. There is nothing about this sign that is immediately clear to me. If this sign is designed to warn the driver of danger…I’m glad I wasn’t driving (my first inclination was to look up). Also, how does this warning do anyone any good? Wouldn’t it make more sense to put up a net or something? Enough of this nonsense…at one of the gas stations I attempted to trade Groupons for gas…no go. Oh well, Mike agreed to take a SCUBA lesson Groupon at Just Add Water in Willoughby, Ohio in exchange for driving and gas.

After parking the car at Becky’s cousin’s apartment just across the river in NJ, we took a bus, then the subway, and finally hoofed it the rest of the way to their friend Lindsay’s apartment in uptown Manhattan. I almost gasped when I saw the space we were going to be sleeping in. To add my concern there was a roommate and her boyfriend already living there as well. Allow me to provide some visual aid…excuse any mess, they are in the process of moving out.

(Left) Lindsay & Lauren took the bed and I was given the luxurious (no joke! I lucked out) air mattress (Right) Becky is small enough to fit on the couch and poor Mike took down some curtains from the bedroom to use as a bed and a sheet (Bottom Left) Hallway nook on the left converted into Roomie’s bedroom a.k.a. futon mattress on floor behind a curtain w/ kitchen and bathroom in the background

(Left) Wasn’t sure I was going to be able to squeeze my way into the bathroom at first. (Below) My perspective once inside…I was pretty sure I was being punked. Seriously, I had to crouch to use the sink.

Despite the cramped quarters, early risers and sun coming through the now curtain-less windows, I slept surprisingly well with the aid of pink ear buds (thanks again Paul in Chicago!) drowning out the ambient noise.

After a bagel (Mike picked some up early this morning) I took a stroll to a nearby coffee shop to camp out for awhile with my trusty laptop. I’m sure the question on everybody’s mind is: why is NYC the eventual destination on this first leg of your trip? Well I’m glad you asked, the reason is, I will be appearing on the TODAY show on NBC thisThursday 5/27 around 10:30am est! That being said…I’d love to get something to wear other than 1 of the 6 t-shirts I’ve acquired over the last 2 weeks. So who wants to help me pick out something in exchange for Groupons? Text me to make plans for this or other NYC activities over the course of the week @ (847) 452-9181

Another great post, Josh! I think anyone that is over 6 feet and weighs more than 180 pounds is in trouble living in New York. I wouldn’t take it as a city’s attempt to spite you!

Keep up the great work! Try to get some pictures of the parks in New York! I hear they’re a sight!

  5. Haha remember that guy at your going away party who opened the door for you because you’re enormous? That was awesome. Glad you made it to NYC!

The best way to get to Seattle is through Portland and straight up I5! Should you choose to pass this way, you’ll have to come through Troutdale (where we live). We can offer an extremely comfy couch (pretty roomy too), washer and dryer, a hot shower, and anything you can find in the pantry/fridge. :) Also, there is an outlet mall down the street.

Best of luck to ya! We’re rooting for much success and loads of fun!
